This is a photographic study I did of Adam Humpherys from ‘Castle carvings’ in Usk, Monmouthshire (South Wales). I was inspired to see him at work when I came across one of his sculptures whilst photographing a garden.
Adam is a international chainsaw artist, he creates sculpture using only a chainsaw.
One of the pieces that he is working on is for ‘Border Sundials’. Adam is creating a sculpture for their Chelsea Flower show (2016) garden, on the theme ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ in remembrance of Roald Dahl on the centenary of his death.
The Tree sculpture is the Hollow Oak that is the entrance to Mr Fox’s Tunnel. The Faces etched into the bark are the infamous ‘Boris, Bunce and Bean’, the villainous farmers, ‘one fat, one short, one lean’ from the book. It is carved from a lump of Cedar using only a chainsaw, with dead oak limbs attached to it.
While I was photographing him work he also started a smaller project – ‘The Mighty Puffin’ as a tribute to Rodger Morgan wales’s oldest rugby player.
